For the past year or so we've been making slow movements towards trying to make the cleaning products in our house more sustainable. When I was flat sharing with a friend in Walthamstow, we went straight in with the white vinegar and some herbs in a spray diluted down some filtered water. And it worked, pretty effectively for things like the bathroom, mirrors, windows and sideboards. However, it doesn't work for everything and also it's not everyones cup of tea.
For cleaning products to make yourself, the UK goddess of green is: Nancy Birtwhistle. With several books out and a fabulous instagram page (see here: https://www.instagram.com/nancy.birtwhistle) it's full of recipes on how to be clean and green at home. Honestly, if you want to get into making your own products Nancy is the go-to person.
Whilst some things I make from scratch and will be trying to embrace more 'homemade' remedies in due course, due to time constraints I've started testing out some of the different brands out there that are doing refillable, concentrated, low packaging home cleaning products. As well as more sustainable options for things like rubber gloves or cleaning sponges. It's fabulous that there are numerous companies like this now operating, however this can also be really overwhelming at times. So as part of the blog I'll be trialling different products for the home from different companies and giving you not only my views but also those of my partner's as they do differ. As well as doing some research on what other people think and how 'green' are the claims being made by these businesses. Stay tuned for cleaning gossip!
